On May 21st, there was a solar eclipse visible in most parts of eastern Japan. I was lucky to be there in time and I was even more lucky as to how I got that picture. This is the true story has to how I came to take this picture.

The night before the annual eclipse, I asked at the reception of the hotel that I staid at, what the best way is to go to the Meiji Ikura Campus. He kindly marked the station on my railway map but unfortunately, instead of Kanagawa he marked Kawagoe Station so I was going to the very opposite of where I wanted to go. So by the time I realized that, after asking the nice officer at the station’s police box, I totally ran out of time to go back towards the campus before the eclipse would be over. Still, I took the Tobu Line train back towards Ikebukuro and at some point, I noticed, that it got slightly darker, so I bent down a bit to look out of the window as the train was packed and I had to stand. This made the nice man in front of me take out his eye shield and take a look at the sun. It was the moment of the eclipse. He asked the girl next to me, who also took a glace out of the window, if she wanted to look through his visor and then he offered it to me. LUCKY!!! So first I took a look with my eyes through the shield. A bit later, he offered the shild again to me so I took the chance to take a picture. I held myself up with one hand against the window, holding the eye shield in front of the camera lense and tried to find the sun. The first one wasn’t good at all and the train stopped at a station, so I couldn’t see the sun. As the train left the station, I tried again but due to the slightly bumpy ride, it wasn’t easy to get a good hold of the sun. The second shot was the “Now or never” shot, I pressed the button and the result can be seen above. LUCKY!!! Of course I showed it to the nice man and the girl beside me and thanked him for lending me his eye shield.
Instead of just knowing I was there when it happened, I was actually able to see it AND take a picture of it.

  2. Some pictures from the DoKoMi. Little convention in Duesseldorf, nothing special but nice still. Met with some friends, met new friends, took a couple pictures, rescued a girl, made be awe with the NeuroCommunication Nekomimi and my Moe-shirt. All in all, it was a nice day, if it hadn’t been so damn hot.

About the rescue part, it was more like, that I carried her from the beach to the First Aid center after she cut her foot on a piece of glass in the water. I like carrying girls on my back or in my arms but I’m so out of practice and shape. Especially carrying a person up and down the stairs drained me quite a lot. But nevertheless, it was a nice day and it’s not a convention, if everything goes well.

  3. 霞さん写真を見てください。 レポートが英語で書かなければなりません。

Every journey starts at some point. Even my journey to Japan had to start somewhere. In my case, Dusseldorf Airport, where I would take the Air France plane to Charle de Gaule Paris Airport. From there, I would have a long flight in the JAL aircraft with a wonderful view, great dinner and breakfast and almost no sleep.

So this is the start of my report about my journey to Tokyo for one week. I’ll try to keep it as interesting as possible. There are tons and tons of pictures that I took and I could write a blog about every single one of them, but I guess, I’ll just write about the more interesting ones.

I have a really hard time to sleep when I travel alone, so on the flight from Paris to Tokyo, I couldn’t sleep at all but instead would watch movies, listen to music and even play games on the entertainment system in front of me. Or as you can see, take lots of pictures of coulds, the wing and the sunset. Shortly after the sunset, the sun rose again already, due to flying eastwards. Both dinner and breakfast were pleanty, and thanks to the nice JAL staff, I had a wonderful flight. I’m never sure if I might have asked to much of them at times, but if I did, they didn’t show it at all. So already on the way to my destination and what might or might not become my destiny, I encountered the friendliness and behaviour of Japanese people. I had experienced it two years before already and I sometimes kind of experience it at work with my Japanese co-workers, but it’s still different from what I got to see and feel in Japan.

If you read the first two sentences that I wrote in Japanese and wonder, who Kasumi might be,  stay tuned, as I will explain that in a later post.

  4. A few teaser for the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong report that will come, when I get my new laptop running properly aka I get a converter for 220V to 110V and Japanese plug. So, enjoy these for now.
